Serving:
The Clinic’s primary healthcare services address the immediate needs of economically disadvantaged people in the State of Maine. As a core principle, we are addressing the basic needs of vulnerable Mainers with basic primary preventive healthcare and mental health counseling support.Â
The people most affected by the inability to access medical care are those without insurance or those with insurance with a very high deductible. The barriers they face are numerous including inability to afford prescribed medication, lack of understanding of potential resources, lack of ability to navigate the system, lack of providers in the community willing to accept them as patients, especially those with multiple co-morbidities and multiple complicated regimes.
We serve adult patients over the age of 18. While we operate out of Ellsworth in Hancock County, in the past several years our patients come to us from from Penobscot, Washington, Waldo, Knox, Somerset, Lincoln. Kennebec, and Cumberland counties. We are one of only five free clinics in the state , and the only one serving northern Maine. On average 56% of our patients are employed; some work two, three or more jobs over a year. They work in the farming, fishing and hospitality industries and these are jobs are mostly without benefits.
